Buffalo Stampede training programs

About the Training Programs

Brought to you by Alpine Performance Run Coaching, this twelve week program has been designed by Bright local, and 2022’s 42km SkyMarathon winner, Blake Hose. There are training regimes for each of our race distances to ensure you’re training in the most efficient way possible for your distance.

Starting out

Week #1 begins 12 weeks prior to the event (Note: these programs are for 2023. Updated versions for 2024 coming soon!)

But don’t worry if you miss out, you can jump in anytime during the first three weeks.

These Training Plans assume that you’ll have done some level of physical activity relative to the distance you’re aiming to do.

For example, the 20km Beginner Plan starts at 19km of total running for week one, whereas the 100km Beginner Plan starts at 44km of total running for week one.

Weekly Format

‘Session / Workout’ on a Wednesday.

‘Long Run’ on a Sunday.

‘Easy runs’ or ‘Rest days’ during the remainder of the week.

Pro Tip: Blake has assumed that you are also working, juggling family commitments and more in your life, so there are no ‘double-run’ days or crazy super weekly mileage goals.

Phases

  • Weeks 1 – 3 are foundational, all about building up the base level fitness.

  • Week 4 is an absorption week. This allows your body to recover before taking the next step ahead.

  • Weeks 5 – 9 are specific training weeks (Pro Tip: This is the core of the Training Plan designed to prepare you for your specific race distance!)

  • Weeks 10 – 11 are taper.

  • Week 12 is race week!

Blake Hose

Blake began his sporting career as a triathlete before spending five years as a competitive cyclist. This saw him enduring countless hours in the mountains and open roads across the country. When his love for two wheels began to wane he made the transition to trail running and was winning races within a year. It was a meteoric rise for the young athlete, but to be expected when you’re gifted with a natural talent for the sport. Alongside his inherent ability, Blake possesses a work ethic that comes from having been a cyclist.

Over the last 8 years, Blake has competed across the globe at events like the iconic Mont Blanc Marathon, The North Face Endurance Challenge in San Francisco and the Transvulcania Ultramarathon.

The latter of these events saw him step on the podium in what is one of the best individual trail running performances by an Australian athlete. He’s also represented Australia at the World Skyrunning Championships and won numerous domestic events, such as The Buffalo Stampede and Great Ocean Walk 100. Blake’s passion for running is only surpassed by his love for wildlife. He has recently completed his degree in zoology and is regularly seen on the trails with his dog Walter.
