The Course – Sky26er – 26km

The Buffalo Stampede Sky26er Course takes runners on a tough 26.9km challenge taking in the unique scenery of Mt Porepunkah which overlooks Bright township. Starting in the picturesque and welcoming township of Bright at the foothills of some of Australia’s most impressive mountains, the Sky26er covers well known climbs such as “The Zapper” and crosses Quins Gap with the main attraction being the sharp short descent back into Bright from Apex Lookout. Runners finish back in the centre of Brights Howitt Park with the sound of cowbells and excited spectators cheering them on.

Course Description

This course is fully marked – well marked! We do not want to loose you more than you don’t want to get lost!!

Leg 1: Bright to Mt Porepunkah

Runners leave the start chute in Howitt Park and take a left after 100m – cross the Ovens River and take a sharp left onto the Canyon Walk. Runners then travel along a further 800m and turn right – cross a grassy paddock and cross Back Porepunkah Rd. Runners then pick up the 4WD track which meanders along the hillside before turning right and ascending steeply for approx 800m. At the top of this hill runners turn right on to Briggs Rd and follow this down to Quins Gap. At Quins Gap runners turn left onto Quins Gap Rd (becomes Roberts Creek Rd). 1.6km after Quins Gap runners cross a bridge and turn right onto “Spots Track”. Runners then do a dog leg – left then right and begin their climb up Telegraph Spur – aka – “the Zapper”. Runners then pop out onto the trail just below Mt Porepunkah and make their way (right) to the summit fire tower.

Leg 2: Mt Porepunkah to 4 Ways to Apex Lookout

After checking in at the fire tower runners descend down the road, turn right and travel along Mt Porepunkah Rd and arriving at “The four Ways” junction. Runners make their way along the marked middle trail (smart creek track) to Tawonga Gap Ridge. Runners turn right here onto Quins Gap track and descend towards Apex.

Leg 3: Apex to Bright

At Apex – runners take the left hand vehicle track up to the tower, from the fire tower – runners turn left and take the signposted single track for 30m and take another left onto the steep single track which descends the most direct path off Apex Hill. From Apex there is only 3km to travel to the finish. Runners cross Back Porepunkah Rd, cross over and cross the Ovens River for a fast finish in Howitt Park.

You do not need to remember this – the course will be marked “line of sight”. You will be shown your course markers before you start on Friday at the race briefing.

Mt Porepunkah (12.5km) – Water, Coke and HEED.
Four Ways Junction (16.5km) – Water, Coke and Fruit.
Apex (23km)- Water, Coke and HEED.
